Christmas is a time of joy, celebration, and reflection on the greatest gift humanity has ever received: Jesus Christ. As parents, it’s important to instill in our children the true meaning of this season by sharing the biblical stories that reveal God’s love and plan for salvation. These stories not only teach timeless truths but also create opportunities for family bonding and spiritual growth. Here are some key Christmas stories from the Bible to share with your kids, along with practical ways to bring them to life.

1. The Angel Visits Mary

Scripture Reference: Luke 1:26-38

This story introduces children to the miraculous announcement of Jesus’ birth. The angel Gabriel visits Mary, a humble young woman, and tells her she has been chosen to give birth to the Son of God. Mary’s faith and obedience shine as she responds, “I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38).

How to Share: Read the story aloud and discuss Mary’s courage and trust in God. Ask your children how they can show faith in their own lives. To make it interactive, let them draw or act out the scene of Gabriel visiting Mary.

2. Joseph’s Dream

Scripture Reference: Matthew 1:18-25

Joseph’s story highlights his compassion and obedience. Initially troubled by Mary’s pregnancy, he is reassured by an angel in a dream that her child is from the Holy Spirit. Joseph’s decision to stand by Mary demonstrates his trust in God’s plan.

How to Share: Emphasize Joseph’s role as a protector and provider. Talk about how God guides us when we face difficult decisions. Create a craft where your children can make a “Joseph’s Dream” star to remind them of his obedience.

3. The Birth of Jesus

Scripture Reference: Luke 2:1-7

The heart of the Christmas story is the humble birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Born in a manger, Jesus entered the world not as a king in a palace, but as a Savior for all people.

How to Share: Read the story by candlelight to create a serene atmosphere. Discuss the humility of Jesus’ birth and what it teaches about God’s love. Consider setting up a nativity scene and let your kids place the figures as you tell the story.

4. The Shepherds and the Angels

Scripture Reference: Luke 2:8-20

The shepherds were the first to hear the good news of Jesus’ birth. Angels appeared, proclaiming, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14). The shepherds hurried to see Jesus and spread the word.

How to Share: Teach your children the importance of sharing good news. Have them imagine what it would be like to hear angels singing. Sing Christmas carols together as a way to celebrate this part of the story.

5. The Wise Men Visit Jesus

Scripture Reference: Matthew 2:1-12

The Magi traveled from afar, guided by a star, to worship Jesus and bring Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Their journey represents the recognition of Jesus as King by the nations.

How to Share: Explain the significance of the gifts and how they symbolize Jesus’ roles as King, Priest, and Savior. Create an activity where your kids can make their own “gifts” for Jesus by writing down ways they can serve or honor Him.

Making Christmas Stories Memorable

To help these stories resonate with your children, incorporate creative activities such as:

  • Family Devotionals: Dedicate time each day leading up to Christmas to read and discuss these stories together.

  • Advent Calendar: Use a Christ-centered Advent calendar to count down to Christmas while reflecting on these biblical events.

  • Role-Playing: Encourage your kids to dress up and act out the stories, making them come alive.

  • Prayer Time: After sharing each story, pray together as a family, thanking God for His love and the gift of Jesus.

Why These Stories Matter

By sharing these biblical Christmas stories, you’re not just recounting historical events—you’re planting seeds of faith in your children’s hearts. As Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” These stories remind us all of God’s incredible love and the hope we have in Christ.

This Christmas, take time to focus on the true reason for the season. Celebrate the Savior’s birth with your family, and let these stories inspire your children to grow in faith, love, and gratitude.
